About The Club

Abingdon is a members club and as such is owned and run by the members, for the members, through an elected committee. The objective of the club is to promote the games of Squash and Racketball in both their social and competitive aspects and to this end the club provides and maintains 4 courts, male and female showering/changing facilities and a bar.

The bar is run by the club’s part time employees who while on duty act as Steward for the club and most day to day matters regarding any aspect within the premises are dealt with by him/her at his/her discretion, with records kept for the committee and discussions held when thought necessary. The Steward will apply the same general rules and regulations in the bar as in any other licensed premises. The bar is open every evening but not normally on any lunch time, weekend tournaments and social events being the usual exceptions.

As for the game itself, on the social side, apart from simply booking a game with another member for fun there are the monthly box leagues, this requires that you play 4 games over a calendar month (against the other people in your box) and the results total decides on promotion to the level above or relegation to the one below. The boxes are structured such that constant replaying of the same people is avoided. There are also a number of annual internal tournaments held for all members including a handicap event which is designed to give everyone a chance to win, the approach to all of these events is generally just to have a few enjoyable games (minimum of 2) spread over a weekend with a bit of spectating and socialising thrown in, the bar is normally open and food available during playing times. The more serious stuff is dealt with at team level ( see Team Squash)

Please note that you cannot book courts by phone, you must come to the club and affix a booking stamp to the sheet provided behind the courts but membership will give you 24 hour access to all but the bar area.

The Committee normally consists of 3 “principle officers”, Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer and a variable number of other members arranging social events, tournaments, team fixtures etc. and dealing with anything else that requires their attention. All of these people are unpaid volunteers normally elected by the members at the AGM in July each year.

Please read the various notices around the club for more details on individual items mentioned above or just ask someone, all our members tend to be down to earth and very approachable giving rise to a nice atmosphere in and around the premises and if you are new to the game someone will be available to get you started.
